Quickly test original Nintendo Entertainment System controllers with this purpose-built NES Controller Button Tester.

Designed for game stores, repair technicians, collectors, and retro gaming enthusiasts, the tester provides an immediate visual indication of each controller input. Simply plug in an NES controller (and 5v micro USB power) and press the buttons—individual LEDs illuminate in real time so you can quickly identify working, intermittent, or unresponsive buttons.

• Individual LED indicators – Each button has its own red LED that illuminates while the corresponding controller button is pressed.
• Great for sensitivity testing – Repeatedly press or hold a button to help identify dirty contacts, worn membranes, intermittent inputs, or buttons that require excessive pressure.
• PASS indicator – The tester remembers which inputs have been detected during the test. Once all eight buttons have registered successfully, the green PASS indicator illuminates.
• Reset button – Instantly clears the completed test and prepares the unit for the next controller.
• Audible feedback – An internal piezo provides audio feedback when controller inputs are detected.

How It Works

1. Connect your NES controller to the tester.
2. Press each controller button and D-pad direction.
3. Watch the corresponding red LED for immediate input feedback.
4. Repeat presses as needed to check button sensitivity and consistency.
5. Once all eight inputs have been successfully detected, the green PASS indicator illuminates.
6. Press RESET to clear the test before connecting the next controller.

Because the individual LEDs respond to the controller’s live input, they can also help diagnose intermittent buttons. If an LED flickers, fails to illuminate consistently, or only responds with excessive pressure, the controller may require cleaning or repair.
